Western New York Flash forward Samantha Kerr has been voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 9 of the 2014 NWSL season.

Kerr, 20, had two goals and an assist to help lead the Flash to a 5-0 victory Saturday over Portland Thorns FC at Providence Park in Portland, Ore. Kerr also played the first half of Western New York’s 1-0 road defeat to FC Kansas City the previous Wednesday.

The 5-0 win for the Flash set NWSL records for the largest margin of victory and biggest road win. It also tied the record for both most goals in a game and most goals scored by an away team.

The Fremantle, Australia native scored her second and third goals of the season and earned a penalty kick for her team in the first half as Western New York snapped a five-game winless run.

Flash midfielder Carli Lloyd converted from the spot to make the score 2-0 in the 28th minute after Portland’s Nadine Angerer was judged to have brought down Kerr inside the box. The Thorns goalkeeper was sent off for the tackle.

In the 32nd minute, Kerr extended Western New York’s advantage when she attacked a corner delivered by midfielder Vicky Losada and headed it off the post before following up to head in her own rebound. (Goal #1 – Watch Highlights )

In the 45th minute, the Australia international gave the Flash a 4-0 lead after she played a smart one-two with fellow forward Jasmyne Spencer before sliding a left-footed shot past Thorns backup goalkeeper Michelle Betos from 12 yards. (Goal #2 – Watch Highlights )

Kerr then helped complete the scoring in the 50th minute when she combined with Lloyd before providing an assist on the U.S. international’s second goal of the game with an incisive pass after drawing the attention of three Portland defenders. (Assist #1 – Watch Highlights )

This marks the second time this season and fifth-time overall a Western New York Flash player has been voted NWSL Player of the Week. Midfielder Vicky Losada received the award in Week 1 of this season; while Carli Lloyd and Abby Wambach (twice) were recognized with the honor in 2013.

The Western New York Flash will return to action Wednesday, June 11, at 7:30 p.m. ET against the Houston Dash at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
