Portland Thorns FC forward Alex Morgan has been voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 11 of the 2014 NWSL season.

Morgan, 24, had two goals and an assist in the Thorns’ 6-1 victory Saturday over the Washington Spirit at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The six goals for Portland were the most scored by a team in an NWSL game and the most scored in a game by a road team.

The Diamond Bar, Calif. native was playing in just her second league game since returning from a left ankle injury that caused her to miss the first nine games of this season.

The U.S. international helped start the scoring against the Spirit with an assist on a goal by fellow forward Christine Sinclair in the 5th minute, seizing on a loose ball in the box before laying it off for the Canada international to put into the top-left corner. (Assist #1 – Watch Highlights)

In the 11th minute, Morgan netted her first goal of the season with a header from inside the six-yard box after the Thorns had several shots stopped from point-blank range. (Goal #1 – Watch Highlights)

Morgan then added her second goal of game in the 71st minute after she intercepted a pass from Chantel Jones before lofting the ball over the goalkeeper to give Portland a 3-1 lead. (Goal #2 – Watch Highlights)

Morgan had eight shots (five on goal) and drew two fouls against Washington before being subbed off after 82 minutes.

This marks the second time this season and fourth-time overall that a Portland Thorns FC player has been voted NWSL Player of the Week – with midfielder Verónica Boquete claiming the award in Week 10 of this season and goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc earning the honor twice as a member of the Thorns in 2013.

Portland Thorns FC will return to action Wednesday, June 25, at 10 p.m. ET against Sky Blue FC at Providence Park in Portland, Ore.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
