18-year-old Canadian extends her win streak to 19 matches

Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) advanced to her first WTA quarter-final on Wednesday night at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C..

Bouchard defeated world no. 82 Olga Govortsova of Belarus 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 to extend her singles win streak to 19 consecutive matches dating back to before Wimbledon. After the players split the first two sets, the heat rule came into effect on a hot night in Washington. When they returned to the court after the break, Bouchard quickly trailed 0-3 in the final, but managed to win the final six games to book her spot in the final eight. In Thursday’s quarter-finals, the 18-year-old Canadian will meet 19-year-old American Sloane Stephens, ranked no. 50 on the WTA rankings.

Bouchard reached the second round in Washington last year, which was her first WTA main draw victory. She won three consecutive tournaments since June, the Grade 1 ITF junior event in Roehampton, junior Wimbledon, and the $25,000 Granby National Bank Challenger two weeks ago.
