It really is quite astounding, that someone with as much political experience as Ed Broadbent would so openly and fundamentally attack the candidate who is the consensus favourite to assume the NDP leadership. I would categorize his comments as reckless, but perhaps worse outright dangerous, leaving much potential for lasting damage. That the elder NDP statesman made subsequent comments in more than one venue, all the more amazing, because a moment of reflection should have solicited pause.

It’s not that Broadbent doesn’t make sense, isn’t articulating genuine concern as to philosophical leanings and personal fitness, but it seems obvious that no good can come from so scathing an indictment. Broadbent has effectively opened up a deep chasm that will have ramifications moving forward. Should Mulcair lose the leadership, fair to ask about his future place in the NDP, particularly if there is the slightest sense that party purists have rejected his presence within. As well, the very real possibility that the verdict amounts to a rejection of the new Quebec breed, since Broadbent went out of his way to divide new and old MP’s into tiers. If this convention reveals any sense of ganging up to stop Mulcair, this doesn’t occur in a vacuum, there will be lasting impact and Broadbent’s words will haunt.

The other scenario involves Mulcair winning, and while much is in doubt, surely Broadbent must realize this the most likely scenario, or at least a real possibility. Mulcair wins, and yet there will be this sense that his colleagues question his mental makeup, people are uncomfortable with his leadership style, some see an abandonment of the traditional NDP political bent. I’m not sure a bunch of smiling faces, arms raised in unity on the convention floor will adequately put to rest the Broadbent blindside, particularly when his expressions aren’t without merit.

Broadbent represents a terrific blunder, a poorly conceived gambit inspired by narrow self interest. In trying to help his sagging candidate Topp, he has undermined Mulcair in a way that cuts deep. Actually, the fact that Broadbent didn’t see the political pitfalls, didn’t react with the slightest FORESIGHT, perhaps a testament to why his brand of NDP leadership never did reach the promised land, because yesterday was strangely amateurish for such a seasoned politician. To say Broadbent’s broadside was ill conceived is being kind….

  1. I think your analysis is completely wrong.
The truth is that Mulcair wants to move NDP to the right making a new Liberal party he wants to be the Canadian Tony Blair.

Ed Broadbent just warned NDP voters what’s going on.

Therefore, there is nothing reckless about it.

I know that right wing extremists are excited that Mulcair can destroy one of the few real social democratic in the world, but that’s isn’t going to happen.

Topp,Peggy, Dewar and Nikki will gang up to defeat Mulcair.

These 4 together have more votes and more money than Mulcair,Cullen and Mulcair’s dog named Singh.

So right wing extremists like Harper can win elections, but a true social democratic
    party like NDP cannot win.
    Well,that’s just BS!

  2. I have listened to the tone of most of the leadership candcomment_IDates with sadness.
Yes, it would be wonderful if the NDP were able to form the official government of Canada, but this is
sadly & only unrealistic for one main reason:

Our country has changed for the worse recently, and only a portion of what is happening makes it to the official mainstream news media. (Some facts of which is available here: http://shitharperdcomment_ID.ca.nyud.net/)

Along with the Omnibus Crime bill Harper has included a bill which dismantles environmental protections of natural waters.
“The Conservative government is systematically dismantling environmental protection and regulation,” sacomment_ID NDP fisheries critic Fin Donnelly. “By eliminating provisions to protect fish habitat, they can push through their agenda of pipelines, oil super tankers, mega mines and other projects that harm the environment. With the stroke of a pen, this government could wipe out decades of progress and condemn future generations to clean up the mess they’re making. It’s reprehensible.”

THE ABOVE CHANGES REMOVING ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION are now LAW

On the World Scene Canada has lost its integrity with respect to climate.
Harper has muzzled our scientists so they cannot speak to the public. Harper has fired watchdogs when they have stood up for their principles like when the Chalk River nuclear plant was not up to
proper regulations and was declared unsafe to operate until the changes had been made. Harper fired the watchdog and restarted the plant without the upgraded safety requirements.

“The woman who was fired by the federal Conservatives as prescomment_IDent of Canada’s nuclear safety watchdog sacomment_ID Tuesday the safety risk of resuming the Chalk River, Ont., reactor was 1,000 times higher than accepted international standards. THIS IS WHAT CANADA’S FUTURE LOOKS LIKE UNLESS OUR POLITICS CHANGE:

Our country’s fundamental values are being stripped away rapcomment_IDly and quietly. This is happening NOW. As can be seen in this news stories:

“Harper gov reversed core principle of parliamentary democracy — that the government is accountable to Parliament http://shar.es/pHs8L

“as a Canadian I want to see commitment to my country, its heritage &values reflected in our political leaders.” http://shar.es/poIRh

WE NEED A NEW APPROACH TO POLITICS IN THIS COUNTRY – ONE THAT RETURNS US TO
OPEN TRANSPARENT HONEST GOVERNMENT. ONE THAT REPRESENTS ALL OF CANADIANS
-NOT ONLY THOSE IN POWER, BUT ALL PARTIES SITTING IN PARLIAMENT!

THE ONLY WAY TO ACHIEVE THIS IS THROUGH COOPERATION OF ALL PARTIES.

Canada, as we knew it, is almost gone. It is imperative that the NDP leadership candcomment_IDates cooperate with the other two parties, to ensure that “The Harper Government” can be turned back into “The Government of Canada”

Right now, Nathan Cullen has my vote, mainly for that reason. (http://leadnow.ca/cooperate-report)
Making the NDP more appealing, or more “centrist”, or staying with its roots, or whatever, does not change the fact that those who are concerned about Canada have two other parties to vote for.The vote split will ensure Harper stays in power.Only cooperation between the other parties can ensure that we can get Canada back.

Over the years, I have watched in awe as Jack Layton cooperated with the most unlikely and uncooperative for the good of Canada, and won concessions so that no one would be left behind. He left a legacy of strategic cooperation to the NDP.

We need all candcomment_IDates to cooperate with each other and with the other political parties in power so that no matter who becomes the next NDP leader, Canada wins.

WE NEED SOMEONE LIKE — NATHAN CULLEN — or someone with his values to restore this Country’s integrity and values and to commit to working together with all political parties so that every single Canadian is represented in Parliament by the members they elect!

COOPERATION IS ESSENTIAL FOR CANADA’S FUTURE!
