“Many Canadians are deeply attached to and proud of our Commonwealth heritage,” said the Prime Minister. “Indeed, many of Canada’s closest allies and trading partners are our fellow Commonwealth members. The Commonwealth is a key forum for dealing with many of the world’s most important issues. This includes its ongoing efforts to promote and protect democracy, good governance, human rights and the rule of law around the world – areas where the Commonwealth has both expertise and a history of achievement.”

Secretary-General Sharma’s visit to Ottawa follows his participation at the Conférence de Montréal on June 8 and precedes his meetings on June 10 with the Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo.
