Aratani/Japan America Theatre at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center-JACCC (Los Angeles, CA)

"Carmen High"

Teen musicians, singers of all styles (from musical theater to opera to rap), hip-hop, jazz and modern dancers, actors, skateboarders, graffiti artists … and opera? Welcome to the mashed-up world of Carmen High, a Glee-like take on Bizet’s classic opera, Carmen. In this contemporary reinterpretation from Pasadena’s own Opera Posse, the action’s transported from 18th-century Spain to a present-day American high school. Fittingly, the title character’s now a cheerleader, while Don Jose (a military corporal in the original) is recast as a high school nerd and Escamillo (originally a bullfighter) captains the football team.
