In Joel and Ethan Coen’s The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001), Thornton stars as Ed Crane, a barber in a small Northern California town in 1949 who is dissatisfied with his life — until his wife’s (Frances McDormand) infidelity presents an opportunity for blackmail that Ed thinks will help him change his circumstances. However, Ed’s scheme soon unravels and lays bare even darker secrets before leading to murder. Michael Badalucco, James Gandolfini, Jon Polito and a young Scarlett Johansson also star. In A Simple Plan (1998), Thornton and Bill Paxton star as brothers who think they’ve found the answer to all their problems when they come across a downed plane containing a bag full of money. However, their windfall soon leads them down a moral and emotional spiral of lies, betrayal and murder. Sam Raimi combines icy chills with powerful family melodrama in this terrific adaptation of Scott Smith’s acclaimed novel. Bridget Fonda and Gary Cole costar.
