BIG Awards are part of the BIG on Bloor Festival opening ceremonies on July 21, 2012 at 1:00 pm. With input and nominations from the community, a list of recipients is announced and awards are presented to the outstanding local citizens by elected officials, Councilor Ana Bailao (of Ward 18), Jonah Schein (Member of Provincial Parliament), and Andrew Cash (Canadian Member of Parliament).

Fast becoming known as one of Canada’s most original and innovative festivals, BIG on Bloor is a fun, free, all-ages, all-encompassing festival and although music is only one aspect of the wide range of artistic and engaging family activities and exhibitions, there is always an impressive musical lineup to enhance the festivities.

This year’s event includes a musically and culturally diverse pool of musical talent and genres. Showcasing on the main stage are JUNO award-winning singer-songwriter and MP for Toronto’s Davenport riding, Andrew Cash, Toronto-based vocalists Darbazi presenting Georgian sacred chants and exuberant drinking songs, garage-rock by The Stormalongs, klezmer polkas and ragtime from The Horables, psyche/country/blues with The Pairs, Japanese drumming group Arashido Taiko and many more! There are also topnotch performers on the Margueretta Stage at Duffy’s Tavern (Margueretta & Bloor streets) including drumming sensations DRUMHAND and ska band the Harmanauts.

Boasting the multi-disciplinary approach, the festival will have exceptional artists and vendors on hand to entertain, showcase and sell their wares throughout the weekend during a host of featured events such as “Savour Bloor” – special-in store events, a food court and multicultural culinary treats – and the BAAF(Bloor Alternative Art Fair) – contemporary art, performance and interactive art, as well as collaborative efforts from art institutions, collectives, galleries and art educators. Side by side, established and emerging talented contributors bring a vibrant mix of art practices to Toronto’s Bloordale Bloor Street.
