This Halloween season, Pasadena’s Pacific Opera Project presents the operatic musical that delivers a bloody good time … literally. Stephen Sondheim’s thrilling masterpiece of murderous “barber-ism” and culinary crime is set in 19th-century London and tells the twisted tale of Benjamin Barker, alias Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after being banished for 15 years on false charges. Now he’s ready to exact revenge on those who wronged him. At first focusing his grisly malevolence on the judge who framed him, his insatiable thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers. A tale of retribution and obsession, Sweeney Todd serves up deliciously macabre portions of gruesome humor, sinister spite and suspicious meat pies. Bass-baritone Phil Meyer portrays the demonic barber, and mezzo-soprano Amanda Carlin is the doting baker, Mrs. Lovett.
