This full-evening salute to the award-winning 2002 film, starring America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) and the late, great Lupe Ontiveros, begins with a book-signing of the play by its writer Josefina López. A screening of Patricia Cardoso’s film version follows, telling the coming-of-age story of a Mexican-American teen who’s torn between following the path her seamstress mother has set for her and pursuing her dream to become a journalist. All the while, she’s navigating issues of self-image and dealing with a budding romance. The celebration wraps up with a discussion featuring the director, writer, actors and others.
