Karrie Ross began painting at a young age and never stopped. Originally from Los Angeles, Karrie spent a few years during the 70s living in both Tacoma, Washington and Vail, Colorado. It was there that she sought inspiration for her art while raising her son.

Best known for her unique spirals and forms, Karrie's work lingers somewhere between the figurative and the abstract. When asked how often she paints, Karrie smiles and answers, "All the time." Ross is a prolific artist who is constantly creating. She adds, "I have to paint… like singers have to sing… I have to paint, to create, to do something that puts me in a different state of mind that might actually be seen in my art by another person and affect their perspective of life."

When asked which artists inspired her early on, she replies, “Picasso and Klee and Dali and Disney—ha!” In fact, she had a chance meeting with Walt Disney at Disneyland when she was just nine years old. She immediately recognized him and was completely starstruck. Disneyland had been her family's favorite vacation spot since she was five. She explains, “It was such a thrill. He was very kind and spoke to us. Back then he would often walk around the park.”

Growing up and attending high school in the San Fernando Valley, all the art students wanted to work at Disney Studios. She explains, “My fascination was that the animation backgrounds were all hand painted landscapes. If you were an artist you were in awe of the quality.”

Years later Ross did in fact work for Disney as an outside contractor for the educationa marketing department. “I loved to think about looking though the 4×5 transparency stills of the animations… there were drawers and drawers of them.”

Karrie continues her dream of creating artwork that will be seen by the masses. This Friday, January 11th, Ross looks forward to being part of the three person group exhibition at haleARTS S PA C E in Santa Monica.

Karrie first met owner Michael Hale when she attended an opening, and she later submitted her work to participate in one of his bi-monthly shows.

Michael talks about Karrie's art, "We absolutely love Karrie's work. Her clever take on nature, and her fantastic shapes and characters are both playful and soulful."

When asked what it was about her art that persuaded him to put her in this show, Hale replies, "The show is a collection of artists that share an excitement for color, shape, and composition."

Stop into haleARTS S P A C E (2443 Main St., Santa Monica) this Friday, January 11th from 5:00 p.m – 8:00 p.m. The show runs though January 23rd and artists Nicole Aronson and OTTO will also participate. http://www.karrierossfineart.com; http://www.halearts.com
