Egyptian Theatre (Hollywood, CA)

Head to the historic Egyptian Theatre for the 30th anniversary screening of the musical film Yentl, Barbra Streisand’s directorial debut, for which she won a Golden Globe. In person at the screening and taking the stage afterward for a Q&A is composer Michel Legrand, who won an Oscar for the score, along with lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman. The soundtrack includes the memorable songs “Papa, Can You Hear Me?” and “The Way He Makes Me Feel” — both popular hits when the movie was released. Yentl is the stirring story of a young Jewish woman (Streisand as Yentl) in early 20th Century Poland who disguises herself as a man so she can defy tradition and continue her study of the Talmud beyond the level normally allowed for women. While at a Jewish religious school, she winds up in a romantic triangle with a fellow student (Mandy Patinkin) and his fiancée (Amy Irving). This groundbreaking exploration of religious and gender identity was adapted from Isaac Bashevis Singer’s short story/play. The screening is part of a larger series dedicated to the films scored by Michel Legran, co-presented by American Cinemateque and the French Film and TV Office at the French Embassy of Los Angeles.
