haleARTS S P A C E presents their annual Valentine’s exhibition….”Love & Lust.” The group show will feature artists, Erin Hammond, Allison Hanley, Sarah Stone and Charles Swenson. It is a mix of figurative and abstract works.

Works portraying the classic nude with high heeled boots will be featured as part of Charles Swenson’s “Nudes and Shoes” series. The nudes are not wearing the shoes, as one would expect. The shoes appear to be floating past the subject, or as Swenson describes…”tumbling against a beautiful sky and are joyous.”
Swenson has been painting most of his life. Inspired by David Choe, Saber, and Shepard Fairey, Swenson has dedicated his life to art. An Emmy Award winner, he has also enjoyed a successful career as an animator for children’s programming such as the TV Series “Rugrats” and many more.
He explains his series “Nudes and Shoes, “I’ve combined Nudes and Shoes. The original paintings are of the female figure, classic studio nudes painted during 2007. But during the last few months, I’ve laid shoes over them. Black shoes. High heeled shoes. Boots. Placed directly over t he figure, sometime over the face, sometimes singularly, sometimes in multiple, and it has radically changed the nature of the original paintings.
He continues, “Where they were paintings of women, now they are paintings of shoes. And by obscuring the figure and putting it in the background they now say something different about women, about their relationship to fashion, they say something about voyeurism, because you have to look past something to see the figure, and they say something about sexuality in that the shoes are sexy, kind of flirty, black, high heeled and a little domineering–demanding and slightly larger than life where the figures are slightly smaller. I love the combination and what each has done to and for the other.
Hale is excited about being able include Swenson’s work is this year’s Valentine’s Day show, saying, “Charles is a very talented painter.”
Hale suspects this years exhibition will be well received. The show had a great response last year. It was well attended and was a wonderful showcase of an eclectic collection of fine art and fine art photography,” remarks Hale.

The artist reception for “Love and Lust“ will be held this Friday, February 8th from 5:00 pm – 8:00 p.m. at haleARTS S P A C E. The gallery is located at Edgemar Center, 2443 Main St. in Santa Monica. The show runs though February February 20th.
Gallery hours are Thursday, Friday & Saturday from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.
