San Gabriel Mission Playhouse (San Gabriel, CA)
More than 100 years ago when John Steven McGroarty’s The Mission Play was first staged, it caused a sensation. More than 2.5 million people were entranced and entertained by this epic tale of how, against incredible odds, a ragtag bunch of Franciscan friars braved extreme hardship to establish a chain of mission churches up and down the California coast. Today, the Mission Playhouse brings back its namesake production for an extremely limited engagement with The Mission Play 2013. While keeping all the pathos and excitement of the first edition, The Mission Play 2013 has been updated to include perspectives not included in the original, such as those of the native Tongva Tribes. The result is a multicultural celebration of California’s wild, fascinating history with dance performances from Arte Flamenco Dance Theatre, the Gabrielino-Tongva Dancers and the Chinese American Dancing Group.
