It is said that Beethoven, increasing deaf and at his wit’s end, one day “heard” Fate itself pounding on his door as he tried to compose. It was the sound of this knock, both triumphant and terrifying, that inspired the first four notes of his Fifth Symphony, his greatest masterpiece. Now New West Symphony concludes their 2013-2014 season with this immortal monument to the human spirit — one that enriches and transforms all those who hear it. In addition, music director Marcelo Lehninger will share the stage with his mother, the acclaimed Brazilian pianist Sonia Goulart, for a performance of Chopin’s romantic Second Piano Concerto. Opening the program will be the world premiere of Cosmic Dust, commissioned by the Symphony from composer Russell Steinber, the Harvard PhD whose most recent orchestral works debuted at Carnegie Hall.
