Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5"

It is said that Beethoven, increasingly deaf and frustrated, one day “heard” Fate itself pounding on his door as he tried to compose. It was the sound of this knock, both triumphant and terrifying, that inspired the first four notes of his Fifth Symphony. Now New West Symphony concludes its season with this immortal monument to the endurance of the human spirit. In addition, music director Marcelo Lehninger will share the stage with his mother, the acclaimed Brazilian pianist Sonia Goulart, for a performance of Chopin’s romantic Second Piano Concerto. Opening the program will be the world premiere of Cosmic Dust, commissioned by the Symphony from composer Russell Steinberg, the Harvard PhD whose most recent orchestral works debuted at Carnegie Hall.
