The restoration of Alfred Hitchcock’s nine surviving silent films has been the biggest and most complex restoration project undertaken by the BFI National Archive to date. Decades of damage and wear have been removed; the sharpness of the images restored; new shots discovered and intertitles and tinting restored. The BFI used film elements borrowed from seven international archives in the restoration process. Hitchcock’s silent films are essential to an understanding of his later work and these restorations now enable them to be seen afresh and discovered by new audiences across the world. They have been traveling the globe and now they’re coming to Toronto for the exclusive Canadian premiere.

The Manxman 1929

Director: Alfred Hitchcock

Starring: Carl Brisson, Malcolm Keen, Anny Ondra

Set in the remote Isle of Man fishing community (but shot in Cornwall), The Manxman is Hitchcock’s penultimate silent film and of the best and most mature works of his early career.

The story follows two boyhood friends who take markedly different paths in adulthood: Pete becomes a fisherman, Phillip a lawyer. Both fall in love with the same woman, bringing them into conflict not only with their own moral code but also that of their strict society. This tragic love triangle might not seem like obvious territory for the director, but his earlier film The Ring proved his ability with this type of drama.

The portrayal of the wild coastline is among the most evocative in any of his work. The complex and sensual performance of Anny Ondra as the part vulnerable waif, part flirtatious femme fatale is clearly the reason Hitch cast her in suspense masterpiece Blackmail, later that year.

Contemporary reviews described it as a film of “remarkable power” The director established his strong visual motifs throughout as powerful metaphors for the unforgiving puritanical society confronted by the characters. From the opening shots to the rugged wild coast, this is a spectacularly beautiful film.
