ALL THE INFO:

What is MISN?

MISN is a grassroots, volunteer-run group based in Toronto that organizes to highlight and confront negligent mining practices in Canada, the country where over 75 of global mining businesses are based. We do this by 1 educating the Canadian public on mining injustices in Canada and around the world; 2 advocating for stronger community control and supporting self-determination in mining affected areas; and 3 denouncing corporate impunity and seeking substantive regulatory change. We work in solidarity with affected communities in an effort to be responsive to their calls for support. Check out our main website at www.mininginjustice.org A lot of what we do also happens during Spring Into Action: http://mininginjusticesn.wordpress.com/

What’s the orientation about?

A few times a year, MISN holds orientation sessions that are open to anyone interested in learning more about or contributing to MISN activities. This is an opportunity to learn a bit about the impacts of Canadian mining companies, to get familiar with our working methods and our current campaigns, to ask questions, and to have a dialogue with participants about what their interests are and how they may contribute to MISN. If you have a particular area of interest that you would like to see represented in MISNs activities, we would love to hear about it and talk about how we may be able to work towards that. You do not have to be an expert on mining issues or at all certain about wanting to organize with MISN to attend! We do ask, however that you be open to learning and working within an anti-oppressive framework we’ll talk more about this at the orientation!.

MISN is an organization run entirely by volunteers. The huge array of events, campaigns, and actions we organize year-round depends on a team of organizers like you! to bring it all together. We need your skills, knowledge, and energy in our commitment to hold mining companies operating at home and abroad accountable.

MISN is always open to welcoming new people into our working collective. If you are unable to attend this orientation but are interested in getting involved please email us – if this is the case for a number of people we’ll hold another orientation soon. If you want to join later on in the year, you can email us at a later date so we can let you know when the next regular MISN meeting is and make sure to give you an intro and answer any questions beforehand. But we suggest coming to this orientation if you can you wont be the only new person in the room, and its a good chance to get to know one another.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us: mininginjustice@gmail.com

Please contact us if you need child care. We will have art supplies and a separate table in the same room with a designated child minder.

We regret that Harvest Noon is not wheelchair accessible as it is up a flight of stairs. Our regular meetings do take place in a wheelchair accessible space. Please get in touch if for this or other reasons, this orientation session may not be accessible for you or there are ways we can support your attendance and participation.
