September is the so-called Mes de la Patria Month of the Fatherland in the territory known as Chile, during which the 18th falls on the Day of Independence. Behind the flaming proud flag lies the usurpation and genocide of many peoples. Chile in its recent 204 year history stands on a territory named in Mapudungun, showing on its coat of arms and in its short life as an independent country from the Spanish Crown, symbols of another nation. They are symbols of the Mapuche Nation that we must rescue since they strengthen our history and life as millennial Peoples against the ongoing plunder of our territories.
This genocide has continued throughout the history of the Chilean State, both on the indigenous Peoples that preceded it and even its own people that struggled for the change of a new society. Displacement, persecution and plunder have been the symptoms of the shock doctrine that was, and is the implementation of the Capitalist Police State on our territories that was not exclusive of the Pinochet military dictatorship that began with the bloody Coup of September 11th, 1973. Many thousands were killed, tortured and disappeared throughout this long history, and the genocide continues today with the persecution of any who dare to resist the ongoing plunder of our Peoples, territories, indeed the shackles that hold us prisoner.
It is a story with similar ties and histories with the rest of Abya Yala and Turtle Island, in the incessant search for the conquering of resources, whether animal or mineral, propelled by an ideology of accumulation and repression. A people that live on the whims of an unjust and criminally organized society should not celebrate the genocide of its own people. This September, our people continue to struggle on the front lines, on the streets and in our reclaimed territories. The struggle is ever ongoing and this is our homage to them.

[125 minutes, with English Subtitles]
The documentary NEWEN MAPUCHE, the Strength of the People of the Land recounts the struggle of the indigenous Mapuche communities in so-called southern Chile to reclaim their ancient territories and the many costs they face due to the repression of the Chilean government; specifically through charging their leaders through the Anti-Terrorist Law.
In this context, and unto the murder of young Mapuche Weichafe [Warrior] Alex Lemun, filmmaker Elena Varela embarks on a journey to tell the story of this Nations last 10 years of resistance. She compiles the data of various events, becomes acquainted with Mapuche leaders, prisoners and underground Warriors, who elaborate on why they struggle.
The Chilean State implements various strategies to detain the social movement while Elena registers the process, but is unaware that she is also being investigated and surveyed by State intelligence force. On May 7th, 2008, Elena is arrested under a judicial set-up during the filmmaking process and has all her material confiscated. Elena narrates her own personal and lived experience with political persecution.
