Chief among them maybe the glittering Takarazuka, a legendary all-female performance troupe known for its lavish spectacles, gender-bending and outrageous costumes. Takarazuka!!! is a thrilling new play that offers a fascinating (if fictional) glimpse into this real-life theater and school. Yuko is the company’s top star but now faces retirement. Her “sayonara” performance looming, Yuko is beset by mysterious events — and even a ghost — as a young talent aims to take her place. Leslie Ishii directs this edgy, exciting work for the East West Players at David Henry Hwang Theater.
