What happens after “happily ever after?” Stephen Sondheim’s Tony-winning musical Into The Woods skillfully interweaves and reimagines several classic fairy tales into one epic story that goes beyond the happy endings to show what happens when a fairy tale world gets real. For its production, Burbank Community Theater adds a steampunk approach to the costuming and sets, an 18-piece live orchestra and cast members who are professional opera singers from companies such as LA Opera and Pacific Opera Project. This fresh twist on the Brothers Grimm brings together Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of beanstalk fame), a Baker, his Wife and, of course, the Witch. But this time around, the beloved storybook characters take on startling complexity as they discover that wishes come with a price. Sondheim’s score features such unforgettable songs as “No One Is Alone,” “Children Will Listen” and “Giants in the Sky.”
