The tradition of celebrating Black History Month began in 1926 in the United States of America. This was conceived by Carter G. Woodson, an African-American historian. The tradition is now widely celebrated in the month of February in USA, Canada and the United Kingdom with the sole objective of remembering important people and events in the history of the African Diaspora.

In Canada it was not until 1995 that a motion was moved to officially recognize February as Black History Month to celebrate and honour Black Canadians. Music Africa which hosts the famed annual festival Afrofest saw it very fitting to honour events and the history of the African Diaspora through showcasing local African music yearly at the Gladstone Hotel. These annual events take place each week in the the month of February.
