Adam Sherkin’s main stage recital of the 2014-15 season features cutting edge music for the piano, written entirely by the newest generation of Canadian composers. A youthful work by the TSO’s recent composer-in-residence Kevin Lau is featured alongside the fiery improv and counterpoint of Denis Gougeon. These are juxtaposed by Star Burning Blue, perhaps the most virtuosic of Kelly Marie Murphy’s works for solo piano. Showcasing Adam Sherkin’s most recent digital release on CentreTracks, WESTERN CAPRICE, two evocative works by Canadians Jean Coulthard and Sophie Eckhardt-Gramatté are also included. To complete the programme, Sherkin premieres his own electrifying cycle of etudes: Tagish Fires.
