“A little Suite on Canadian Folk songs” by Harry Somers will open the program. Clarinetist Michael Westwood will join forces with the orchestra performing Ian McDougal’s “Clarinet concerto” under the direction of maestro John Palmer. The program will also feature the world premiere of a new composition by Toronto based composer Frank Horvat and a “Suite of Latin Dances” by John Palmer who is also the conductor for this event.

Michael Westwood holds a Master’s degree in clarinet performance from the University of Toronto. A product of the studio of the late great clarinet pedagogue and master Avrahm Galper, Michael Westwood has collaborated with a great number of leading Canadian classical musicians over the past two decades. Early in his career, as a contemporary musician, Westwood performed numerous works written specifically for him. In July 2001, Westwood gave the world premiere performance of David Kaye’s “Tango Schmango,” in Tokyo. In addition, Westwood founded and served as co-artistic director for the chamber music series’ Con Fuoco and Eros. Highlights of these series’ include performances of the Schubert’s “Octet,” the Poulenc’s “Sextet and Sonata” for the composer’s centenary year, one of Crusell’s Quartets for Clarinet and Strings, a program of twentieth century music for the turn of the century, and a unique production of Messiaen’s Quartet “For the End of Time.” An extremely passionate chamber musician, Westwood has performed at the Banff, Orford and Domaine Forget summer festivals as a soloist and chamber musician. Westwood has worked, in recent years, with such eminent musicians as James Campbell, Gary Kulesha, Tom Rolston, the Prazak String Quartet, and Jasper Wood.
