Blues Guitarist Bombino

Born in 1980 in a nomadic Tuareg camp near Agadez, Niger, Omara “Bombino” Moctar moved to Algeria at the age of 12, where he developed a guitar style reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré, not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page. Bombino’s 2011 debut album Agadez was a critical and popular hit. Filled with trippy desert blues, it topped the iTunes world music chart and was named one of the top 50 albums of the year by NPR. The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach was so impressed by the disc that he decided to become the hands-on producer for Bombino’s latest album, Nomad. Check out the bluesman’s singular Saharan sound at downtown L.A.’s art deco-style Regent Theater.
