CJFE Debate, Criminalizing Hate: The Limits of Speech in Canada

At 7:30 p.m., following the closed members meeting, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is pleased to be hosting a public debate: Criminalizing Hate: The Limits of Speech in Canada

Open to the public, the debate will consist of two teams argue the resolution: “Canada’s hate speech laws are necessary.”

The team in support of hate speech legislation will consist of former chief executive officer of the Canadian Jewish Congress Bernie Farber, and criminal lawyer David Butt. Civil rights lawyer Clayton Ruby and president of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association Sukanya Pillay will be arguing against hate speech laws. Senior producer of the CBC’s The Fifth Estate Julian Sher will moderate the debate.
