The Upper Canada Repertory Company presents “Sense On The Beach”
A new musical stage adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Sense And Sensibility”
Written by Nastasia Pappas-Kemps and Rochelle Douris
Directed by Rochelle Douris
It’s 1948, and post-war Toronto is bustling. The Dashwood Sisters’ star is on the rise,
performing nightly at the Norland Ballroom, the epicenter of the city’s big band scene.
When Mr. Dashwood dies suddenly, his entire inheritance is left to his son, John, from
his first marriage. John and his wife, Fanny, have no intention of sharing the Norland
with anyone, and the Dashwood sisters are left homeless and nearly destitute. They end
up living in a broken-down nightclub in the Beaches. The move changes their lives
forever, bringing both love and heartbreak to their lives.
Laugh, swing and sing, sing, sing along with the Upper Canada Repertory Company’s
lively, fast-paced update of Jane Austen’s novel, featuring seven original Depeche Mode
songs re-imagined to a swing jazz beat. Blending fact and fiction, “Sense On The
Beach” revisits Toronto on the brink of its emergence as the birthplace of Canada’s
music scene.
