Hand Over Hand Community Organization will host its second annual Accessible Music festival on July 18, 2015 in Thornhill Park from 11am-6pm. This free event will bring hundreds of individuals of ALL abilities together for a day of family fun, activities and music.

The Accessible Music Festival will host local artists, vendors, food, a photo booth, and raffles. The event is also partnered with Autism Ontario, Let’s Jam Percussive & Creative Movement Program and Bheda Yoga, and sponsored by Scotiabank. The event is completely run by generous volunteers and sponsors. All proceeds from the Music Festival will benefit Hand Over Hand members directly by enabling the organization to continue to provide free services for youth and young adults with disabilities in York Region.

Considerations that make the Music Festival accessible for people of all abilities to enjoy include:

• Sign language communication for all performances

• No stairs or architectural barriers for individuals with physical challenges

• A visual schedule to support individuals who better understand pictures or written language

• Reduced volume for individuals with sensitive hearing

• No bright flashing lights for people with sensory sensitivities

• Seating in front of the performance areas for individuals who cannot stand for long periods of time

• Adaptive outdoor adaptive yoga sponsored by Bheda Yoga

• Adaptive drumming sessions sponsored by Let’s Jam

Hand Over Hand is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a community where people with disabilities will feel safe, accepted and supported through peer networks. Hand Over Hand was founded in 2005 by local York Region high school students who started hosting social events for and including individuals with disabilities in their high school. Ten years later many of the same individuals are still the force behind Hand Over Hand’s mission to harness the drive of other young adults to better the community by uniting and embracing difference. Since 2005, Hand Over Hand maintains the goal to not only help fulfill the personal ambitions of their members with disabilities, but also address issues, such as education and accessibility. Hand Over Hand now supports more than 40 individuals in York Region with free and inclusive programming.
