From the perspective of the Asian collections at the British Museum, Dr. Michael Willis reflects on the question of the ‘sacred object’ in the ‘secular space’ of the museum. Questions about the sacred nature of objects turn on the memories that surround them: how memories are created and retained, how they are lost, and how some objects – but not others – can be invested with new and unexpected meaning. Drawing on a career of over two decades at the British Museum and as the curator of several international exhibitions, Dr. Willis is uniquely positioned to assess the changing meaning of objects, and explore how meanings can and do change. Like objects, the museum is also in a state of flux, as is the society that supports it. In this shifting world, Dr. Willis asks whether the museum can be defined as a “place of memory.”
