The Greater Toronto Philharmonic Orchestras is pleased to announce “JAZZY”. The final performance of the 2015-2016 season will present a program of a symphony orchestra big-band style with the clarinet leading parts. Medleys of famous “hits” such as “Summertime”, “I Loves You Porgy” and “Bess you Is My Woman Now” from Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin and “I Feel Pretty”, “Maria” and “America” from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein will be performed by clarinetist Kornel Wolak as soloist accompanied by orchestra.

Another piece in the program will be “Fishing Story” by Canadian composer Maxim Goulet inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea. The World Premiere of this work took place on February 25th, 2014 in Salle Bourgie in Montreal by the McGill Chamber Orchestra. The work is dedicated to clarinetist Kornel Wolak.

This concert will be presented at the Calvin Presbyterian Church (26 Delisle Ave.) on Saturday, May 14th – 8.00 pm. Concert is supported by Ontario Arts Council. www.gtpo.ca/upcoming

Highly praised on two continents for his glorious tone, precise technical control and musical imagination, Toronto based clarinetist Kornel Wolak is recognized as a soloist and chamber musician in both classical and cross-over repertoire. Critics have hailed him for his playing that showed “admirable calm and patience in shaping beautiful sonorities… full of energy,” (Andrzej Chylewski, Glos Wielkopolski); and “control and a smooth, elegant expressivity are what make Wolak shine,” (John Terauds, Toronto Star).
