If I Can't Dance Toronto Reading Group – Event and Duration

This past winter, If I Cant Dance launched Edition VI, with the research field 'Event and Duration':
"Referencing modes of time, If I Can't Dance's interest in 'Event and Duration' emerges from an acknowledgement that bodies, living and nonliving are spatial and temporal beings. This moves from Edition V – Appropriation and Dedication 2013-2014, and it's rereading of the artistic strategy of appropriation as an act based on connecting, acknowledging and being porous to material. Extending these considerations of the subject and object within the conditions of time and space, for Edition VI, 'Event and Duration' will be thought through in terms of lived relations…"

Alongside the usual programme of artist commissions, Performance in Residence projects, seminars and workshops, If I Can't Dance will once again organize a reading group in Amsterdam, with sister reading groups also organized in Toronto, Sao Paulo and New York. For this edition the Toronto reading group is generously hosted by 8-11.
For the first session we will read excerpts from Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer's recent book about Lee Lozano's Dropout Piece:
"Dropout Piece, then, is also a large-scale action Lozano carried out over a long period of time in the lived reality of her life that dictated making small-scale decisions on a daily basis, with lifelong, indeed posthumous consequences."

Taking a spirit of exchange and open-ended discussion as point of departure, the Reading Group aims to facilitate a space for in-depth debate, unexpected links and creative disagreement.
The Reading Group upholds the following set of rules:
1. There is no audience. We do not need to perform this reading group.
2. You do not need to speak from a fixed position. You are not here as a representative of anything or anyone else.
3. Say anything This is all about making the u-turns needed to discover common points of reference.
