Cléo de 5 à 7 (Cléo from 5 to 7)

Director: Agnès Varda

France

1962

89 minutes

Black & White, French with English Subtitles

Directed by Agnès Varda, pioneer of the Nouvelle Vague (the French 'New Wave' of 60s Cinema), Cléo de 5 à 7 is a poignant, eloquent chronicle of 2 hours in the life of the protagonist, Cléo, a chanteuse awaiting the results of a biopsy which she is convinced will bring bad news. This 'real time' existentialist feminist journey carries us through moments profound and trivial and not only captures ideas of mortality, despair, and the struggle to live a meaningful life in an arbitrary and violent world, but is also a beautiful and detailed portrait of Paris in the early 1960s. “A spirited mix of vivid vérité and melodrama.” A recently restored digital print, approved and supervised by Agnès Varda, with improved subtitles. Featuring cameos by Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina.
