IN FINE STYLE: THE DANCEHALL ART OF WILFRED LIMONIOUS
Christopher Bateman in conversation with Chayne Japal
Type Books will be hosting a conversation with Christopher Bateman and Chayne Japal AUX.tv, Fader, Exclaim! to kick off the release of Batemans new retrospective celebrating Jamaican illustrator and father of dancehall art, Wilfred Limonious.
ABOUT THE BOOK
In the early 1980s Jamaican popular music underwent a paradigm shift with the emergence of a new style: Dancehall. Conventional reggae songwriting and production techniques were traded in for the light-hearted boasting over digital riddims, with humour and slackness the order of the day.
Wilfred Limonious 1949-1999, a quiet and observant newspaper cartoonist, became the primary visual architect for this new genre, designing countless album jackets and record label logos. With colourful comicbook characters, scribbled commentary and outrageous Patois-filled speech bubbles, the world he created was the perfect visual counterpart to the islands emerging dancehall scene.
Compiled over a number of years, the book features examples of Limonious newspaper comic strips alongside his illustrations for the publication JAMAL the Jamaican Movement for the Advancement of Literacy, and his distinctive artwork for the burgeoning dancehall scene coming out of 1980s Jamaica.
