LIFT FALL 2016 PANEL DISCUSSION:

MEDIA ARTS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Panelists include Ella Cooper, Paul Nguyen, Blacus Ninjah and Jorge Lozano.

Moderated by Nasreen Khan of the Ontario Arts Council.

LIFT is presenting a panel centered on Media Arts and Community Engagement. The selected panelists are multidisciplinary artists, art educators, granting programmers, and community activists whose work responds to social, political, historical, LGBTQ and racial injus-tice. The speakers will delve into their work with successful commu-nity arts programs, the critical role it plays and how to secure funding for community oriented project development and implementation.

MODERATOR:

NASREEN KHAN is a media artist, musician and an arts educator. She was born and raised in Toronto and is of mixed parentage (Indian and Welsh). As an arts educator/community arts facilitator, she has worked and partnered with many Toronto-based visual and media arts organizations including the AGO – Art Gallery of Ontario, Inside Out LGBT Film Festival, Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts, Trinity Square Video, Charles Street Video and A Space Gallery. Previous to her position at the Ontario Arts Council – Conseil des arts de l'Ontario, Nas was a photography and printmaking teacher with the Toronto District School Board and the Education Coordinator for Images Festival. In May 2007, Nas joined the Ontario Arts Council as the Arts Education Officer. SCHEDULED PANELISTS:

ELLA COOPER is an award winning multidisciplinary artist/filmmaker, experienced creative facilitation, arts educator and consultant who has worked in Canada's arts and culture sector for over 15 years. Ella has received continued project support from both the Canada and Ontario arts councils and has been presented in galleries, public spaces and film festivals around Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary as well as on the CBC and Bell Fibe TV1.

PAUL NGUYEN is an award-winning activist and filmmaker from Toronto's Jane-Finch area. In 2004, he created Jane-Finch.com to change negative stereotypes about his community. Within a short period, his grassroots project became a national success story. Paul’s impact is recognized by political and community leaders across Canada receiving multiple awards for his work in multiculturalism and race relations. He is a public speaker and media commentator on race, crime and youth issues. In 2006, he spent a year working with CBC’s the fifth estate following lives of gang involved youth in the Gemini-Award nominated "Lost in the Struggle."

BLACUS NINJAH is a conscious rapper with an eclectic mix of commercial tracks combined with philosophical lyrics. Blacus continues to promote positive themes in rap music to mainstream audiences across Canada and the world.

JORGE LOZANO has been a significant player in Toronto's media arts scene for almost four decades, as both a media maker and community facilitator (his long history of contributions to artist-run culture in the city includes the co-founding of the aluCine Latin Film & Media Arts Festival). The last decade has been extremely prolific for Lozano: half of the nearly 100 works in his videography were made since 2005, and he has expanded from single-channel work to installation, most impressively with the eight-screen "MOVING STILL" still life, which premiered at the Ryerson Image Centre in late 2015.
