GermanyGrohndeNuclearPowerPlantJust nine months ago, Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel extended the lifespan of the country’s nuclear plants by an average of 12 years. In a complete reversal of policy, the coalition government has announced the pahsing out of all nuclear power plants by 2022. This decision would make Germany the largest industrial power to give up nuclear energy. Ms. Merkel was quoted as saying “Our energy system has to be fundamentally changed and can be fundamentally changed. We want the electricity of the future to be safer and, at the same time, reliable and economical.”

How the country would be able to deal with power shortfall remains to be seen. Opposition parties quickly jumped to criticize the government over job losses and price increases as in 2010, apparently 23% of Germany’s power comes from nuclear energy. With the recent closure of seven of its oldest nuclear plants, Germany has had to import power from France and the Czech Republic to make up for the loss of its own electrical generation. Those seven reactors which were taken offline for a safety review immediately after the Japanese crisis will never be used again.

While the announcement of this policy change came today, the decision still has to be ratified by parliament and the federal cabinet will not be making its final decision about the future of nuclear energy until its meeting on June 6.
