Oshawa teacher Stephen Martin charged for making child pornography

Investigators with the Major Crime Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit (SAU) arrested a Durham Region teacher on Wednesday and have charged the 38-year-old with numerous pornography-related offences.

On Wednesday March 30, 2011, members of Major Crime SAU executed a search warrant at a home of a Durham Region teacher on Magnolia Avenue in Oshawa. Officers arrested the suspect at scene without incident and seized several computers and computer-related equipment housing images of child pornography for further investigation.

Stephen MARTIN, age 38 of Magnolia Avenue in Oshawa is charged with: Luring x2; Invitation to Sexual Touching x2; Possession of Child Pornography and Making Child Pornography. The accused was held for a bail hearing.

Investigators determined the accused posed online as a female and engaged young males to use a webcam and expose their genitals and/or send sexually explicit images directly to the accused. It is alleged the accused then used these sent images in his production of child pornography. The accused’s Facebook profile is: Ashley Mtthws and his Hotmail accounts are under the assumed name of Ashley M or Ashley Matthews.

The accused has been an elementary public teacher in Durham Region since 1998 but there is no indication he was approaching children while working. He has taught at the following schools:

Dr. CF Cannon Public School, 2010 to present
Norman Powers Public School, 2009/2010
Sir William Stephenson Public School, 2004/2009
William Dunbar Public School, 2000/2004
Sir John A McDonald, 1999/2000
Cadarackque Public School, 1999

The investigation is ongoing and efforts are being made to ensure there are no further victims. Investigators are requesting parents and caregivers of students who previously attended the above-noted schools or who are currently students at these schools to discuss this matter with their children and report any criminal activity to investigators.

The DRPS is committed to the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet which was created in August 2006 in response to the McGuinty government’s request that police develop a coordinated, multi-disciplinary province-wide approach to combating Internet crimes against children. The provincial strategy is jointly supported by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of the Attorney-General for Ontario.

The Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet is comprised of the OPP Child Exploitation Section, 18 municipal police services, 2 crown attorney provincial coordinators and 1 victim services coordinator. The 18 police services partners include: Barrie PS, Brantford PS, Durham Regional PS, Guelph PS, Greater Sudbury PS, Halton Regional PS, Hamilton PS, Kingston PS, London PS, Niagara Regional PS, Ottawa PS, Peel Regional PS, Sault Ste. Marie PS, Toronto PS, Thunder Bay PS, Waterloo Regional PS, Windsor PS and the York Regional PS.

  1. This fruitcake tought me at william dunbar years ago. As students, we all got a bad vibe from him, and rumors were in the air depicting acts of this nature.

  2. 2 years less a day, this guy should get life life along with the rest of the lowlifes that mess with our children. We need more testing on teachers and their skills as well. This one slipped through the cracks.
