Phone call from the Premier to Rob McEachern demonstrates hands on approach to patronage on Prince Edward Island

PNP applicant Rob McEachern gets personal call from Premier Ghiz

When Rob McEachern got frozen out of the Provincial Nominee Program in the summer of 2008, he called his MLA, Richard Brown and finally the Premier of PEI.
Premier Ghiz called McEachern back the next day with a promise.
“I’ll look into the file and get back to you to see if there’s anything that perhaps was overlooked. Anyway Robert I hope you have a great weekend. Take care. Bye bye.” (Premier Robert Ghiz voice mail from CBC News)
Later Ghiz would claim that he knew nothing about the PNP scandal.
However, if Ghiz wasn’t involved, why did he call Rob McEachern and tell him he would look into it?
Because Ghiz knew every file that was getting approved or turned down.
His cousin, lawyer Bill Dow, was not only acting for IIDI who were handing out the money, Dow was directing things from the Premier’s office. Dow was also the holder of the Ghiz family trust accounts.
Gordon Cobb, a civil servant who blew the whistle on the PNP scandal said the Premier’s cousin was in charge.
Opposition Leader Olive Crane wanted the answers.
“The Opposition leader said the public has a right to know what role Premier Ghiz, and officials in his department played in the administration of this program and the activities of Charlottetown lawyer Bill Dow, who appears to have been working closely with the premier on this file.
“For Mr. Cobb, to state publicly that Mr. Dow “was in charge of PNP” and to indicate that it was Mr. Dow who made the decisions about what happened with the management and direction of that program raises many questions as to who was actually in charge.”
Crane said she is disturbed to hear that Mr. Cobb is indicating that the Ghiz government has exposed the Island to potentially hundreds of millions in liability, as no system was in place to track the efficiency of the program if foreign nationals nominated by PEI are ultimately rejected for a Canadian visa.
“Can it be that a lawyer, who is outside of government, who was hired only on a contract has played a key role in exposing Prince Edward Islanders to a potential liability involving hundreds of millions of dollars?” asked Crane. “This is a nightmare.”  Crane calls for public inquiry

  1. This is just theft. Give the immigrants their money back. It was taken under false pretences.
Unfortunately, I have lived on this island. It was insane regarding all the rules being broken- No dept or agency follows any rules. They simply oppress or harm any indivcomment_IDual who tries to live there-brutal society if one is “from away”. They follow no gov’t rules, they don’t even follow their own rules. Rules and regulations are for appearances only. Bullying others is rampant everywhere on this island. The food is contaminated with toxins and whenever there are rains, the toxic soil and run-off goes into their rivers causing massive fish kills. Sewage is still going into their waters.
This latest immigration scandal has caused harm and embarassment for all Canadians. A strong message that this will not be tolerated needs to be sent to Islanders.
