GALLERY 1313 New Exhibitions May 29- June 9 /2013 1313 Queen St. West 416-536-6778 * *Main Gallery : VISTA | An aesthetic exploration of Europe. Photographic series by Ezio S. Molinari * One can take a trip and choose to either live behind the lens or live in the moment. The trick is to find a balance so as to be able to absorb the atmosphere, beauty and history of where you are. Ezio S Molinari The Vista series was shot on a month long trip to Europe after a 21 year absence, traveling through London, Paris, Florence, Venice, Rome, Udine and Barcelona. Ezio was awestruck by the aesthetic beauty that revealed itself in many forms, from scenery to architecture to details. He was inspired to finally capture, frame by frame, his version of the continent that had influenced so many of his youthful artistic dreams. The series has been produced as Epson prints flush-mounted on masonite with a rear-mounted frame. Each piece has been hand glazed with a minimum of 3 coats. The treatment of each image is customized to lend to the subject matter. In some its a stylized tweak while in others its an exploration of layers and textures. Finally, in lieu of a signature, a gold leaf thumbprint of the artists own thumb is imprinted on the o.utside right edge of each piece sealed in glaze. *Process Gallery : Leftovers art works left at Gallery 1313 Cell Gallery : Men at work 3 by Alex Liros * This work continues my interest in men and technology, and my interest in drawing, drawing with the addition of photo-based collage elements of images pulled from the internet. Once again I go back to pipelines, the pipeline workers and the machinery used to build and maintain the pipelines. About half of the work is based on images found on industrial websites (manufacturers of pipeline equipment, petroleum magazines, oil companies). In these images the workers are either posing to have their photograph taken, or are working without looking at the camera. A few images are straight from manufacturers catalogues of pipeline equipment, including pipeline pigs (maintenance projectiles that are launched into the pipeline and then removed). However, as I trolled the internet I began to come across something quite different: images that showed the hazards (or opportunities) that come with oil pipelines. Lots images of guards or soldiers (mostly in Iraq), patrolling the pipelines, and one image of military officers examining damage to a pipeline, and another of four men using a pole to break into a pipeline. What I didnt include were images of massive oil theft, again in Iraq, with dozens of oil tankers lined up for the stolen oil to be siphoned into them. And then I include a Nigerian delta rebel, posing with a rifle in his hands, and with his eyes shut; he is one of many rebels who have taken up arms against the government and oil companies whose profits do not benefit the impoverished delta people. All works are on paper 9 x 12, pen and ink with collage. *Window Box Gallery : FRANK James Gardner* Displayed for the Month of June FRANK is an ever-evolving entity of insulation foam. He has been built up, cut apart and stuffed into rooms and awkward spaces again and again, and will continue to be again and again. The sculpture in its many incarnations is an experiment in the language of abstract sculpture and undermines conceptions of a finished and static work of art. FRANK aims to achieve a complexity of form and colour through a constant reworking of material and by visually exploiting and developing the affects of duration and exposure on an unstable medium. James Gardner is an artist and member of VSVSVS, a collective and artist-run centre based out of a warehouse in the portlands of Toronto. Gallery 1313s Window Box is programmed by interdisciplinary artist and curator Tara Bursey. Gallery Hours Are Wed- Sun . 1-6pm
