TomTom scraps 300 jobs, AI takes over work
Navigation company TomTom scraps a large number of jobs. 300 functions must disappear in the coming period. It concerns employees who make route planners, sellers and staff who help customers.
The personnel reduction is related to a strategy change from the Dutch company. TomTom says “to embrace artificial intelligence”. By making use of AI, TomTom thinks it is easier to get up and scale to make and deliver products.
With the 300 jobs, around 10 percent of the current number of employees disappear. “This change improves experience and shortens innovations for our customers,” says CEO Harold Goddijn in a press release.
150 jobs in the Netherlands
Of the current workforce of around 3,700 employees, almost 2500 people outside the Netherlands work. Less than half of the 300 jobs disappear in the Netherlands, a spokesperson said. The rest disappears throughout the locations worldwide.
TomTom was once familiar with navigation equipment for cars. In the meantime, the company is making maps for Route planners from Apple, Huawei, Volkswagen and Renault.
For the past two years, TomTom has fallen into the red figures. Last year the company suffered a loss of more than 14 million euros.
