Vice President Taiwan in Prague chased and intimidated by China
Chinese diplomats and members of the Secret Service intimidated HSiao Bi-Khim of Taiwan last year and planned an attack on her during a visit to the Czech Republic. That is what the Czech military intelligence service says.
According to Czech media, HSiao was chased in Prague by a Chinese diplomat. He drove through red to follow HSiao’s car and would have wanted to cause a car accident. That plan has not been implemented.
The Czech solditors intelligence service says that Chinese diplomats “had taken actions that were contrary to the diplomatic rules”. The service also says that HSIAO was being followed and that tried to find out her agenda during the visit. In addition, it is discussed without further details about “physical action” against the Taiwanese vice president.
Tires with Taiwan
Just like other EU countries, the Czech Republic does not maintain official diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Prague does have warm ties with the island.
China has seen Taiwan since the origin of the People’s Republic of China as an apostate province that must be incorporated. In recent years, the Chinese army has regularly been holding military exercises to put pressure on Taiwanese leaders. The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense announced last month to prepare for one Chinese invasion in 2027.
Relationship Czech Republic/China
The relationship between China and the Czech Republic has cooled considerably in recent years. Last month, the Czech Republic accused China behind a cyber attack at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen also visited Prague in October. Czech politicians, in turn, have visited Taiwan.
China denies the accusations from the Czech Republic and says that Chinese diplomats always adhere to the laws and rules of the host country. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that the Czech Republic has interfered with the domestic affairs of China by allowing HSiao to continue.
According to Taiwan, China has seriously threatened the “personal safety of vice president HSiao and her entourage”. The island demands that China makes public apologies.
China correspondent Laura van Megen:
“For China, Vice President HSiao is a thorn in the eye with President Lai.” Dangerous separatists, “China calls them. Since their election it has become a lot more unsafe in the Taiwan street through China’s increasing military pressure.
The new Taiwanese government under LAI and HSIAO is sailing a political course that is more focused on independence of the island. Taiwan is also looking hard for connection with the rest of the world, with UN organizations, and especially with countries with which they do not have diplomatic relations, such as the Czech Republic. For that reason HSiao was in Prague.
That the Chinese wanted to know what exactly she did there and who she met, will not be a surprise to anyone. But that there was a plan to physically endanger HSiao, seems an escalation.
Taiwanese leaders are not on mainland China for safety reasons. China also decided last year that “fanatic Taiwanese separatism” can be punished with the death penalty.
