Warrap State Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, Victor Atem Atem has confirmed that cattle raiders believed to be from Mayom County of Unity State attacked a cattle camp in Maper Payam on May 12.

“On May 12, in the area of Maper Payam of Twic County, cattle raiders from Unity state entered Warrap State launched an attack at 3.30pm when grazing cattle were returning from Toich to the camps,” he said.

He added that the attackers were heavily armed with machine guns were found to have been hiding in swampy areas along Lol-kau River.

The few combined forces of police, community police, Wildlife, Fire Brigade and SPLA officers in area intervened but were outnumbered by the attackers.

“Our few community police around plus the few law enforcement agencies(Police, Fire Brigade, wildlife) and SPLA forces in Maper combined tried to rescue cattle from the attackers but couldn’t make through,” Atem stated.

Warrap being among the triangular states with massive cattle rustling, it has suffered several raiding flashpoints from neighbouring Unity and Lakes states.

Earlier this year, several police stations where opened in cattle raiding areas to help curb the practice. Among the stations include, Ajak-Kuach Police station, Mangool, Akop and Mony-ngok.

The authorities stated that they have communicated with authorities from Mayom County to establish stations on their side but there was no feedback.

The minister however said that their attention was at Misseriya side since they were reported to cross river Lol to retaliate on UNISFA forces following the killing of Ngok Dinka Paramount chief two weeks ago.
