China will have to work hard on increasing corn demand by producing in bulk as the requirement for meat products amongst the customers has increased. China is the world’s second largest producer of corn. The corn consumption is largely associated with animal feed and industrial products.

“The government must closely monitor the industry,” Vice Minister Chen Xiaohua said at a press conference in Beijing today.

“To maintain balanced supply and demand for corn, we must fundamentally develop production,” Chen said. The government will also “control and curb” industrial processing, he said.

It is expected that China’s corn harvest may climb 3.5 percent from last year to 179 million metric tons. Planted area is expected to be increased by 2.8 percent.

It is expected that annual Imports may go up to 20 million metric tons in 10 years, provided that the domestic output does not increase as expected.

“China is also “experimenting” with the use of genetically modified corn to help lift output”, Chen said.
