Terrorists attacked the offices of top Pakistani intelligence agencies in Sukkur on Wednesday. The attack led to a shootout, killing seven people including five terrorists, an intelligence agent and a government employee.

“A total of seven people were killed and several injured. The dead included three attackers, two suicide bombers and two others. It was ISI headquarters which was attacked. The gate and front walls have been blown away,” said Major General Rizwan Akhtar, head of the paramilitary force, Sindh Rangers.

The attackers had planned to sabotage the building through dual means. Initially, a car bomb exploded in close proximity of the intelligence office followed by several armed terrorists attacking the complex. Initial reports claim that 38 people received serious injuries in the unprecedented incident. Sukkur is otherwise a quiet city where terrorists rarely find a reason to mark their presence.

“Armed people have attacked. Apparently it is an organized terrorist attack, we have sent a heavy contingent of police to the site,” Javed Odho, a Sukkur police officer told the press.

According to the police, the attackers aimed to destroy the workplace and residence of senior officials belonging to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI). One bomb was planted outside a police building and another near the ISI office.

Masood Bangash, the deputy superintendent of police in Sukkur confirmed that the security forces detained up to 10 militants allegedly involved in planting and detonating explosives.

“One suicide bomber detonated an explosive laden car in front of ISI office and other militants started firing on police,” Masood Bangash told the media.
