The Phoenix Police Department while conducting a training exercise with bomb-sniffing dogs lost a container with explosives at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Friday at 2.30 pm. The police department has taken full responsibility for the incident and acting chief, Joe Yahner has assured investigation regarding the theft of the container and also an internal investigation.
The explosives contained in the container were confirmed to not be dangerous as they could not have been triggered by a gunshot or by being thrown to the ground. Acting Chief Yahner said that “The explosives were merely two half-pound tubes of a substance typically used in mining and were in an amount appropriate to be a fair test of the dogs”.
The explosives were present in an Igloo container. They were retrieved by a motorist driving on Lower Buckeye road, close to the 19th Avenue. The explosives had not been tampered with in any way; neither removed nor touched, the police officials confirmed.
The exercise was part of the routine training of trained dogs to identify explosives while in an actual setting. However Yahner stressed on the seriousness of the incident when he said “There will be accountability based on the investigation. We want this never to happen again.”
