After Brian Topp announced his candidacy for late Jack Layton’s position, conservatives without delay began daunting the NDP hopeful by calling him a creepy union partisan.

Conservatives wrote in a memo: "Topp is a union boss and has deep union ties. How could Brian Topp speak on behalf of all Canadians, when he is so tied to big union special interests? (His) ties to the United Steelworkers union’s Canadian-born President Leo Gerard."

Topp said while announcing his candidacy: "We’ll talk a bit more about this race from a British Columbia perspective. And I certainly intend to spend an appropriate amount of time in Western Canada."

On the other hand, Ontario NDP chief Andrea Horwath and her party paid tribute to Jack Layton at a renowned club late Monday. Later, just like others, Horwath embraced Layton’s legacy. The party’s well-liked federal leader’s loss keeps on sparking sentiments with the nation, she said.

Horwath said: "Tonight’s about a celebration of everything that brings us together… such a profound impact not only on my life (but) let’s face it — on the life of all Canadians."

NDP’s new head will be designated in a one-member-one-vote course on March 24.
