twiTwitter’s president of global revenue, Adam Bain has said in a statement

”We’ve had five years to watch and observe how people are using the platform organically and we know politicians are active on the platform, and we know that consumers enjoy the messages from those politicians.”

The essence of this statement is that twitter is now aiming to capitalize by advertisements that will be used as part of political campaigns of different candidates. With the elections coming up in the next year, Twitter has now also been included in the list of platforms from where candidates will be reaching out to the public.

With regards to the appearance of the advertisements, the Twitter management has said that the political advertisements will not be any different from the other ones, there will only be slight changes so that users can differentiate between the ads. They have given the following statement:

  • “Promoted Tweets will appear in search and can also be targeted to followers (we’re not testing political ads in the timeline at this time)
  • Promoted Account recommendations will appear on the right” side of the Twitter.com interface in the “Who to follow” module
  • Promoted Trends will appear at the top of the list of Trends.”

While highlighting the similarities between normal promotional material and elections, the CEO said “Political campaigns and advertising campaigns share a lot in common… The motivation to connect and talk and create a dialogue between consumers and whatever the products that the marketers are driving for are not dissimilar to how campaigns think of the dialogue between the citizen themselves and campaigns.”

So now the candidates have another platform to focus up on: Twitter. All hail the social media revolution.
