In a totally unexpected stunt, Statistics Canada has announced to delay the release of a major set of data from the 2011 National Household Survey. The scheduled release of data on income, earnings, housing and shelter costs on Wednesday morning was delayed in an announcement made today.

The agency mentioned in a statement that “Statistics Canada found issues in data processing that need to be addressed prior to release,” explaining that “all the data previously released from the National Household Survey are not affected.” The incident has sparked pouring critical remarks of statisticians who oppose the National Household Survey data in general, complaining that since the survey is voluntary it may not reflect minority groups accurately.

A leading expert on the census and senior vice-president and chief demographer at Environics Analytics, Doug Norris, alleged that he cannot remember the last time when a data release date was delayed after its announcement. Norris, who worked at Statistics Canada for nearly 30 years, including as director general of social and demographic statistics, alleged that “what surprises me is it comes two days before the release.” He mentioned that “it’s always possible somebody ran something and found an error that it’s affected a bunch of tables,” but he pointed out that “to come so close to the date of release is really surprising to me, but it can only be that somebody found an error that nobody has seen in the last six months, which is a little bit surprising … There are a lot of eyes that go over it in the weeks and months before.”
