FC Edmonton defender John Jonke (centre) celebrates his goal with his teammates on SundayFC Edmonton centre-back John Jonke has been named the Defensive Player of the Week by the NASL for Week 23.

Jonke was instrumental in his team’s 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Silverbacks on Sept. 7, a game in which FC Edmonton claimed a playoff spot in its first ever season in NASL competition. Jonke played the full 90 minutes and was named Man of the Match by FCETV Play-by-Play host Gareth Hampshire and Colour Commentator Steven Sandor.

Jonke followed that performance up with another gem on Sept. 11 against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Jonke scored his team’s only goal of the game and despite losing 2-1 in injury time, Jonke was solid at the back throughout.

Jonke has played 17 games for FC Edmonton in the NASL this season and has one goal, one yellow card and one red card.
