FC EdmontonEdmonton Will Travel to Florida for Game on October 1

After finishing off the regular season in Montreal on Sept. 17, FC Edmonton had to wait a week before knowing who they would face in the first round of the 2011 NASL playoffs.

It all came down to one game on Saturday night between FC Tampa Bay and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

Going in to Saturday’s match, FC Edmonton had already nailed down the fifth place spot in the standings, but FC Tampa Bay and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers were tied on 38 points. The winner would finish the season in third and would then face the sixth place team in the quarter-finals while the loser would finish fourth and host FC Edmonton.

FC Tampa Bay, the home side, managed a 1-0 victory over the Strikers and FC Edmonton booked their flight to South Florida.

“Obviously we’re satisfied with making the playoffs, that was our goal at the start of the season,” said head coach Harry Sinkgraven. “But now it’s a new season and we want to win in the playoffs as well.”

FC Edmonton will fly to Fort Lauderdale on Thursday morning in preparation for Saturday’s game which kicks off at 5:30 MST (www.fcedmonton.com).

If they win in Fort Lauderdale, FC Edmonton will host a home playoff game in the semi-final round.

“We’re not looking past Fort Lauderdale at all,” said captain Chris Kooy. “They’re a strong side so we’ll have our hands full with them but we’d love to host a playoff game as well. Our fans definitely deserve that.”
