Milos Raonic21-year-old Canadian falls in four sets to Aussie veteran

Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) played his first ever match on Centre Court at a Grand Slam on Saturday at the Australian Open in Melbourne, Australia. The 21-year-old Canadian didn’t get the result he was hoping for on Rod Laver Arena as he dropped a tough fourth setter in the third round to former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3.

Raonic played a flawless first set to get the early lead, but it seemed the occasion got the better of him in the sets that followed. Hewitt, who is used to playing primetime matches at his home Slam, showed vintage form, using his speed and veteran experience to get the better of Raonic. Facing three set points in the third set tiebreak, Raonic saved two of them and then missed a overhead smash to give Hewitt a two sets to one lead. In the fourth, Raonic was broken early and saved two match points with Hewitt serving for the match. On his third chance, the Aussie hit an impressive lob over the 6’5” Raonic that sent him into the fourth round where he will meet World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

Raonic was unable to defend the fourth round points he earned last year at the Australian Open which means he will likely slip in the rankings.

In doubles, Daniel Nestor (Toronto, ON) and his partner Max Mirnyi of Belarus advanced to the third round on Saturday with a 7-6(0), 6-2 win over Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah. The second-seeded pair will meet the Italian team of Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace.

Meanwhile, Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC), Filip Peliwo (Vancouver, BC) and Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, ON) will represent Canada in the Australian Open juniors event which begins on Sunday.
